With NFTs hitting the headlines and collectibles all the rage, it was only a matter of time before the cult of celebrity made an appearance. To this development, Mila Kunis and her team launched the Stoner Cats, animalistic NFTs with a penchant for recreational narcotics.
The Stoner Cats are a series of 10,420 algorithmically generated feline pot advocates, each selling for a flat rate of 0.35 ETH (plus gas). The collection however, comes with a twist – ownership of a “spaced kitty” provides exclusive access to a series of short animations featuring the degenerate felines.
The aforementioned televisual experience features a star-studded cast, including the likes of Jane Fonda, Chris Rock, and dishing out sagely advice, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin. Episodes are wholly funded by the NFT sale, with the first instalment arriving on July 29.
The launch was initially “dogged” with teething problems due to bugged code. The release was delayed by 24 hours while the devs put it to rights. And, when it did launch, gas prices soared and over 334 ETH was lost in failed transactions.
Despite all of this controversy however, the Stoner Cats sold out in an incredible 35 minutes. That’s a ridiculous 3,647 ETH, or around $8.5 million dollars. Since the auction ended, the feline pot heads have been changing hands for around 0.4 ETH on the secondary market.
The moral of the story, there is nothing like the the celebrity juggernaut when it comes to marketing your product. With a further 3000 NFTs in the pipeline, stoned kitty mania may be in its ascendency.
